In a recent interview with IC Wales, WBO super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe spoke on his future and several potential opponents.
Calzaghe feels that America no longer has any top super middleweights, which has forced him to look for fights in other weight divisions.
"The problem is America has no top super-middleweights anymore. Lacy was the man. He ruled the castle but I completely destroyed him and there's no one left," Calzaghe said.
He broke his foes down, one by one, but appeared to be upset that Bernard Hopkins did not take a fight with him and instead signed to face Winky Wright in July. Calzaghe hopes that Jermain Taylor moves up to 168-pounds to make a super fight.
"Roy Jones Jr is finished and both Hopkins and Wright have sidestepped me. I wanted Hopkins big-time but he knows I would be his last fight so he's taking the easy option by fighting Wright, who is a blown-up light-middleweight. Hopefully Jermain Taylor will step up to super-middleweight otherwise I'll step up for a shot at a light-heavyweight world title. American TV giants HBO are investing in me by showing my Manfredo Jr, fight live so with their backing there is no reason why I won't go," Calzaghe said.
There is always his Denmark rival, undefeated WBA/WBC 168-pound champ Mikkel Kessler. Calzaghe would love to face Kessler, but only if the American public demands the fight. Calzaghe will not face Kessler in Denmark, and claims that he refuses to leave the country. The demand of the American public, in Calzaghe's opinion, may be the only thing to lure Kessler to the United States to make the fight happen.
"Americans want fighters they know and they don't know Kessler. If America wanted me to fight Kessler I'd do it. Kessler doesn't want to leave Denmark and I'm not fighting over there. If he'd come to Wales then maybe. Like me he's undefeated and a very good fighter but Kessler is not proving himself against top names. It's up to my promoter to make my dream fight in the States happen. Unfortunately I'm around at the wrong time. The super-middleweight division is sparse and big names in other divisions are too scared to fight me. I'm going to stop talking about it now as it makes me so frustrated," Calzaghe said.
