According to a report in Daily Mail , Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is trying to make rematch between Joe Calzaghe and Bernard Hopkins. Calzaghe won the fight with a close split decision in 2008. The Welsh star retired in early 2009 and promised never to come back unless there was a serious payday on the table, but lately rumors of a comeback have been building, but some report the comeback may be a swerve to push the attention away from Calzaghe's recent scandal where he disclosed his use of cocaine.

Schaefer spoke to Calzaghe over the weekend. Joe flew down to Las Vegas to catch the Mayweather vs. Mosley bout at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Schaefer said both fighters expressed interest and he'll try to make it happen.

"Joe has expressed interest and so has Bernard. We will try to make it happen in the autumn," Schaefer said.

Joe's father and trainer, Enzo Calzaghe, says the rumors are not true. Enzo claims that his son has no desire to return to the ring. Joe has not fought since beating Roy Jones Jr. in late 2008. The fight with Hopkins, while close, was not exactly a exciting fight and few people would have interest in a rematch. Hopkins looked way beyond his best when he won a decision over Roy Jones last month.

"There is no truth in it - and I would be the first to know. [Joe has] achieved everything I wanted to achieve in boxing. The talk of Joe coming back is news to me and being close as I am to Joe as a trainer and a father, I would be first know. As far as I'm concerned he is retired and the word retired means retired. He probably wakes up every morning and think shall I have another fight? But thinking about it and doing it are two completely different things," Enzo Calzaghe told BBC Sport.

"His legacy is second to none and only a few in the sport have the mystique of finishing their career unbeaten. He retired because he had lost his hunger for boxing. Once you lose the hunger, how are you going to reignite it? For financial gain? Joe and my boxing philosophy was always it's all about the glory rather than the money whereas a comeback would be for the wrong reason.
