The current ruler of the super middleweights, Joe Calzaghe, wants a super fight for next year, and the winner of the upcoming trilogy bout between light heavyweights, Clinton Woods and Glen Johnson, may very well be his opponent.
Calzaghe would have to move up to the light heavyweight division to meet the winner, something he's been hinting at doing for the last two years. Before retiring, Calzaghe has said that he would love to win a title in his second weight division.
Currently, Calzaghe is scheduled to defend his IBF/WBO super middleweight titles in Manchester on October 14, but he wants another career defining bout in the Millennium Stadium in 2007.
"I always want to fight at home. In excess of 25,000 would have come to see me fight in July at the Millennium Stadium and I was disappointed to have to pull out. I see no reason why I can't get a big fight at the Millennium Stadium next year. It would be interesting to fight the winner of IBF light-heavyweight champion Clinton Woods' defence against Glen Johnson on September 2," Calzaghe tells The Trinity Mirror.
Initially sidelined with a hand injury, Calzaghe says the hand is doing much better and he hopes to finalize an opponent for the October bout this week.
"I am happy with it now, I can punch fine and it won't be a problem. I am hoping the opponent will be finalised this week and we're waiting on a few phone calls, so we should know in the next few days," Calzaghe said.
