Enzo Maccarinelli’s heart-felt statement released yesterday to explain his actions leading up to a post-fight positive drugs test seem to have been shunned by former trainer Enzo Calzaghe, who has expressed his disgust at the Swansea man.
Calzaghe trained Maccarinelli in the build-up to his British title challenge against Shane McPhilbin, which the former WBO title holder won before testing positive for banned substance MHA and has now branded his former pupil ‘despicable’ in the wake of his six-month ban form the UKAD.
“I will never forgive him for what he has done. I’ll never train him again,” Calzaghe told The Sun.
“He has made me look a mug. This has slaughtered me.
“I’m totally anti-drugs and feel so let down that someone I’ve treated like another son should behave in such a despicable manner.”
Maccarinelli, 31, explained that a dietary supplement was to blame for the test failure and that he has fully co-operated with the investigating by the UK Anti-Dopin Agency, whilst accepting the punishment.
The relationship between the two former colleagues has clearly now gone beyond repair and Maccarinelli has now moved on to be trained by Gavin Rees’ coach and former fighter Gary Lockett.
