Bernard Hopkins is telling anyone who will listen - "I will be heavyweight champion in 2010." Hopkins decisioned Enrique Ornelas on Wednesday night in dominating fashion. He wants a shot at David Haye's WBA heavyweight title next year. Hopkins and Haye are both under the Golden Boy Promotions banner. Hopkins was set to fight Roy Jones Jr. in a rematch in March but Jones was stopped by Danny Green in one round in Australia, also on Wednesday.
Hopkins may still go after Jones for the March rematch. Joe Calzaghe, who decisioned Hopkins last year, says the veteran fighter should stay far away from David Haye. He feels Haye is too big, too strong and too fast Hopkins.
"I don't think it's a good idea for him to fight David Haye," Calzaghe told BBC Radio 5 live's Victoria Derbyshire show. I think Hopkins should retire because he is 44 and he is going to end up getting hurt."
"If he fights a big guy like Haye, who is too fast and too strong, he will end getting knocked out way too quickly and that would be a shame to see as he (Hopkins) is a legend of the sport. It is time to call it a day."
