WBO junior flyweight champion Ivan Calderon plans to continue the "national" win streak for his country. He aims to become third Puerto Rican fighter of 2008 to beat his Mexican-based opponent in a major bout. He faces Hugo Cazares on August 30 in Puerto Rico. The two met last August with Calderon coming off the deck to win a close split-decision to keep his title and perfect record intact.
He notes that WBA welterweight champion Miguel Cotto demolished Alfonso Gomez in March, and he sees Cotto avenging the loss of Kermit Cintron (knocked out by Antonio Margarito in March) by beating Margarito on July 26. He pointed out the one-round destruction of Mexico's Daniel Ponce De Leon by Juan Manuel Lopez, which took place a few weeks ago in Atlantic City.
"We already began with a big one, and that was "JuanMa" beating Ponce De Leon. Then it continues with Miguel Cotto and then I plan to close our grasp on the gold," Calderon said. "The rematch with Cazarez will be an event that will satsify all of the expectations, just like the first time."
