The first fight back in June ended with a technincal draw due to a clash of heads that opened up a serious cut on Ivan Calderon (33-0, 6KOs). The rematch was more of the same. Once again there a bad clash of heads. Once again Calderon was cut. Once again his fight with Filipino fighter Rodel Mayol went to the cards.

At Coliseo Jose Miguel Agrelot, Hato Rey, Puerto Rico, Calderon retained his WBO junior flyweight title with a split decision over Mayol. The scores were 68-65 Calderon, 68-65 for Mayol, and 68-65 Calderon, after seven rounds of action.

The rounds were close, some very tough to score with both fighters having their moments. They clashed heads often during the contest. Calderon was more defense than he was in the first encounter. A clash of heads in the seventh opened up another bad cut on Calderon. The fight was stopped and went to the cards.
