Heavyweight contender Bryant Jennings (19-2, 10KOs) is ready to step in, and replace Wladimir Klitschko on December 10th in Manchester.
On that date, IBF champion Anthony Joshua (17-0, 17KOs) is scheduled to make the third defense of his heavyweight crown.
There were serious negotiations for Klitschko to face Joshua on that date. It was revealed on Monday that Klitschko had suffered a minor injury and wouldn't fight again until the spring of 2017.
Even if Jennings is selected for the contest by Joshua's team, it's very hard to see the IBF approving such a fight. For starters, he's not ranked in the top 15.
Jennings is also on a two-fight losing streak. He challenged Wladimir Klitschko for the world titles last April. Despite putting in a good effort, he still lost a sizable twelve round unanimous decision. Then he fought Cuban banger Luis Ortiz and was knocked out in seven rounds last December.
Since the loss to Ortiz, Jennings has been inactive. Ironically Ortiz has since signed a promotional agreement with Joshua's promoter, Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport.
While Jennings is eager to land this opportunity, he would be better suited to gain some activity with a tuneup or two.
"I will fight Anthony Joshua sometime in the future period," Jennings exclusively told Sky Sports. "Upon whatever circumstances we fall upon, December 10? That's possible. I'm going to say that's possible."
"I understand they have a great fan base over there - a lot of loyal, dedicated boxing fans - and I just think I have a whole lot more to offer. I think I can be appreciated a whole lot more from an overseas fan point of view, rather than America. In America, pretty much they have got their eyes set on who they want to push and things like that. Any activity would interest me. Top guys like to fight top guys. Of course that's of interest."
