BoxingScene.com recently caught up with heavyweight contender Bryant Jennings who faces WBA/WBO/IBF/IBO champion Wladimir Klitschko on April 25th at Madison Square Garden in New York.
The undefeated Jennings - along with newly WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder - are by far the most recognizable heavyweight fighters in America. I asked Jennings if the division is stronger and more interesting in The States now that Wilder has brought a belt back to the USA.
"Not really because the only two names that are the hottest - I am not going to say hot - is me and Deontay Wilder. If you look at Wilder and the situation that he is part of, he is part of a crew that does what they does. We need 5 A+ guys and 5 B+ guys and we need to alternate each one of those guys through out the year and that will continue to generate excitement," Wilder told BoxingScene.com in explaining what needs to be done to generate interest in the division. "Now those B guys have to fight hard to become A guys and maybe some of those A guys become B guys but it only takes 10 solid heavyweights that will be able to be consistent and shake the American boxing heavyweight division for 4 or 5 years.
"You need these A and B fighters fighting each other for the A positions because even if I fight two times a year and so do the other A guys fight two times a year you can keep the exciting fights going on throughout the years. That is the only way I can see it happening. If you have two exciting fights then that creates an even more exciting fight between the winners."
