Featherweight Bryan Acosta outlasted Ronny Rios in a crossroads main event bout on Saturday at Thunder Studios in Long Beach, California.
Acosta won a 10-round unanimous decision over Rios by scores of 98-92, 99-91 and 99-91.
Acosta, of Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, started strong, landing a good right uppercut in close quarters and forcing the pace. Rios, a 36-year-old from Santa Ana, California, began to find himself on the ropes in the second round, as Acosta, 27, demonstrated the youthful energy to get the better of their exchanges.
Rios responded in the third round, rocking Acosta with a left. As Acosta’s pace began to slow, Rios landed thunderous punches, including a dazzling right hand in the sixth. Acosta made the fight harder for himself with technical flaws in his footwork, which was pointed out by boxing trainer Robert Garcia on the ProBox TV telecast. Yet the story of the fight was Acosta’s pressure, which was relentless.
Acosta continued to walk down Rios, targeting the body, but he was unable to cut off the ring. Rios continued to land big shots, but his power lacked the potency to stop his opponent from coming forward. Acosta continued to push ahead and throw punches, while Rios went backward and was selective with his shots. The final rounds were repetitive, as Acosta played the role of aggressor and Rios showed heart but was unable to match Acosta’s intensity.
Acosta snapped a two-fight losing streak and improved to 21-2 (8 KOs). Previously, he had lost a unanimous decision to former title contender Ramon Cardenas in a junior featherweight bout in February 2025. Then Acosta moved up to featherweight, where he was stopped by Sulaiman Segawa in September. This was also his first fight with his new trainer, Bob Santos.
Rios, who was coming off a 17-month layoff, is now 34-6 (17 KOs) and has lost his past two fights. He had most recently fought for the WBA title, falling by stoppage to then-titleholder Nick Ball.
