Dominic Ingle, the head trainer for former IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook, is hoping that his boxer will finally face career rival Amir Khan in 2020.

Brook is returning to the ring on February 8th in Sheffield, when he faces Mark DeLuca of the United States.

The contest will be the first for Brook since winning a tougher than expected decision over Michael Zerafa in December 2018.

The discussions for a potential Khan vs. Brook encounter have been mentioned for years.

At one point in 2018, everyone thought a deal would eventually happen when Khan signed on with promoter Eddie Hearn, who also handles the career of Brook.

But Khan would close out that promotional pact by taking a pass on Brook and instead facing WBO welterweight champion Terence Crawford in the early part of 2019.

Ingle hopes the contest finally comes off, at least for the fans who sat patiently for years.

"I remember when at one point in his career Kell Brook left the Ingle Gym and signed with Frank Warren and went to train with Dave Coldwell on the promise of boxing Amir Khan," he told 5 Live Boxing with Costello and Bunce.

"I turned to my brother John and we looked at each other and we thought ‘it’s never going to happen’ and you know what, it never has happened! When you’re in boxing a long time you know how the game is played. There’s certain set moves, it’s like playing chess.

"There’s reasons why it’s not happened. There’s a lot of great fights we never got when fighters were in their peak. Lennox Lewis against Mike Tyson – they weren’t at their peak, Floyd Mayweather against Manny Pacquiao – they weren’t at their peak and it wasn’t a great fight.

"I hope we do get Amir Khan. Not for Kell Brook or Amir Khan but for the fight fans who have wanted that fight for a long time. Even now it will be car crash TV, it will be very interesting, who knows?"
