IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (36-1, 25KOs) has serious doubts that his domestic rival Amir "King" Khan (31-4, 19KOs) will actually face him in the ring.
Both fighters took big risks by moving in weight this year, and suffered stoppage defeats. Khan jumped up to 155-pounds and was knocked out in six rounds by Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez in May. Brook went up by thirteen pounds, to 160, and was stopped in five by middleweight king Gennady Golovkin.
Brook, who at first was looking to head up to the junior middleweight limit of 154-pounds, will remain at the welterweight limit. Very likely in his first fight back, he is due to make a mandatory defense against undefeated Errol Spence.
In a recent interview with The Sun, Khan stated that he wants the fight with Brook to happen in 2017.
Khan told The Sun: “I think that fight could happen next year. I want it to happen and I want it to happen at 147-pounds. We both went up two weight divisions this year and we both didn’t win. We should box at welterweight to finally see who the man is. My body frame is not built for light-middle or middleweight. It wasn’t healthy for me. welterweight suits me and it’s where Brook won his world title, so that’s where we should do it.”
Brook doesn't believe him. He thinks Khan is talking just to talk and has no intention of actually stepping in the ring with him.
"He's another one. We've heard him talk about this before. I've just been dealing with the man [Golovkin]. I don't know what else [Khan] can say. He's got nowhere else to go. There is no other fighter who is going to give him as much money as there is with fighting me. Me and him put together is the fight. Let's just do it at welterweight," Brook told IFL TV.
"I'm fed up with talking about it. You have to talk to him and interview him. I just want to smash him up and when he's down - I'll look at him and say 'I've told you, I've told you. I'm the man.' This queen, Amir Khardashian. Everybody has stopped me today in Monaco, not even in England, asking me when I'm going to fight Khan."
