Mike Tetteh of Goldenmike Boxing Promotions staged a nice little tournament on Saturday in his hometown of Accra, Ghana. Several well-matched international contests have taken their places at Ohene Djan Sports Stadium, including no less than six title twelve-rounders.
WPBF (World Professional Boxing Federation) was the acronym of the night, as this little-known sanctioning body offered their vacant belts for three various fights in three different weight classes. Highly touted light heavyweight Braimah Kamoko (20-0, 15 KOs) scored his best victory so far, stopping experienced former WBO middleweight titleholder Hector Javier Velazco (37-9-1, 16 KOs) in ten one-sided rounds. The Argentinean was deducted a point for excessive holding in middle rounds, was down for standing eight in the ninth stanza and was saved by his cornermen from further punishment in the tenth.
In another WPBF match-up, rugged welterweight Joshua Okine made it 20-4-1, with 13 KOs, after a one-sided win over 2000 Sydney Olympics gold medalist Mohammad Abdullaev (20-4, 14 KOs). Scores were 120-108, 119-109 and 118-110. Abdullaev is best known for his gutsy loss to Miguel Cotto in 2005. In the third WPBF fight of the evening, junior welterweight Albert Mensah (22-3-1, 10 KOs) was in for hard work against tough-as-nails Russian Karen Tevosyan (15-3-3, 9 KOs). Final scores – 119-110 (twice) and 118-111 – barely reflect that narrow edge that Mensah had during the bout. Team Tevosyan will woe for a rematch to be held in Russia.
WBO #15 and WBO Africa super featherweight champion Emmanuel Tagoe (14-1, 6 KOs) destroyed Kenyan Samuel Kamau (11-4-1, 10 KOs) at 1:13 of the very first round in the initial defense of his title. Kamau lost his third in a row. In a bid for a vacant WBO Africa super middleweight crown an only upset was created as South African Peter Mashamaite (18-8-1, 9 KOs) got the better of local favorite Ishmael Tetteh (20-5-2, 10 KOs) over twelve hard-fought rounds. Scores were: 115-114, 117-112 and 118-112 – for the guest fighter. In a local affair, Alfred Tetteh (11-5-2, 7 KOs) scored a narrow majority decision over Ishmael Aryitey (1-2) to take a vacant Ghanaian featherweight titles. Scores were: 113-113, 115-112 and 116-111. Finally, WBA #15 junior Lightweight Maxwell Awuku (11-0, 6 KOs) stopped overmatched Dan Quartey (0-3) in four rounds of scheduled eight.
