According to multiple reports, Mexican fighter Ulises Hueto Elizalde was shot dead by masked gunmen after leaving his gym in Mexico City.

The 33-year-old super middleweight boxer, who saw action in March with a decision loss, was shot dead near the Barrera gym (owned by Marco Antonio Barrera). Elizalde has only two pro fights listed on his record via boxec, but boxrec often has incomplete records for Mexican boxers.

The boxer was leaving the gym around 1pm to head home, when two masked attackers on a motorbike drew their guns and unloaded on him.

Elizalde, according to reports, suffered as many as 10 bullet wounds, including four to the neck and two to the face. It's unclear how many shots were fired in total.

Authorities in the area have said the attack was gang-related, but have no idea why Elizalde was a target.

Witnesses have stated the gunmen had some form of silencers on their firearms and they didn't make much noise. When the medical services arrived, they could not do anything.

The Barrera Gym has been home to world champions like Marco Antonio Barrera, Jorge 'Travieso' Arce, Julio César Chávez Jr., Jorge Linares, Rodrigo 'Gato' Guerrero, Edgar Sosa, Rodolfo 'Rudy' López and Juán 'Churritos' Hernández.

The Mexican Commission posted the following message:

"The Professional Boxing Commission of the CDMX joins in mourning with the family of boxer Ulysses 'El Chispa' Hueto Elizalde over his senseless death, hoping that the consolation will soon reach their hearts. May he rest in peace."
