MIAMI—Not only does the Boxeo Telemundo series get to truly return home, but armed with more shows in tow.
The 2020 season is set to kick off February 21, with the good news that it will be the first of 16 shows on the year. The four-show promotion was revealed at a special kick-off presser Wednesday afternoon at Miccosukee Resort and Gaming, which will host the season premiere after nearly 10 years away from the Telemundo circuit.
“There can’t be a better place than this one,” Felix ‘Tutico’ Zabala Jr., president of All Star Boxing told BoxingScene.com of the Miccosukee Dome returning to the Telemundo series, for which his company serves as the primary content provider. “I live seven miles away, and Telemundo is only a couple of miles away from Miccosukee.
“It’s win-win for everyone involved. We had so many great shows here in the past so it means a lot to be able to bring back this series.”
The return home was met with open arms by the establishment, which helped usher in the series way back in 1989. It served as a circuit favorite for more than 20 years before hosting its last Telemundo card in October 2010, with the series eventually moving primarily to Central Florida and Mexico City.
Even better news than the comeback, is that there will be plenty more to come.
The February 21 show—topped by a junior flyweight clash between a pair of former title challengers in Puerto Rico’s Jonathan ‘Bomba’ Gonzalez (22-3-1, 13KOs) and Mexico’s Saul ‘Baby’ Juarez (25-10-2, 13KOs)—kicks off the first four-block season within the 2020 season.
The series format changed in 2013, advancing from one show per month to three separate four-weekend blocks. It led to stronger ratings and greater familiarity with the regular participants, enough to where the network was convinced to maintain and build upon its success.
“We worked on [adding more dates] for a long time,” explained Zabala Jr. “We’ve considered it for the past three years and were finally able to bring everything together and get those extra dates.
“Now it’s 16, and we have room for the series to be everywhere—Miami, Kissimmee, Mexico City, Niagara Falls (upstate New York).”
