Coach Jose Bonilla looked surprised by the rumor that his protege, former WBO welterweight champion, Carlos "El Indio" Quintana, who headlines a Universal Promotions card on Feb. 18 in Ponce, would face Daniel Santos, who is the former WBA junior middleweight king. Bonilla said the two fighters are very close.
"I called someone who told me about it, and now you're telling me too. I was surprised. I had not crossed his mind. What I have understood is that Quintana is going against a Mexican that has eight losses. But I do not think it's Daniel and not on that date. Bustillo did not tell me anything about it," he said.
Santos is training in Salinas with Orlando Rodriguez and says he will return in 2011 with the intention of getting another world belt.
"I do not know where that rumor came from. Danny and Quintana are friends. When Quintana comes to Carolina, Danny goes to the gym to spar with him. I honestly do not know where this rumor came from. I do not think that fight is on. At least on our side, we are not interested in that fight. They're buddies, partners. That information really surprised me," explained Bonilla.
