Errol Spence Jr. has gotten his praises sung by just about everyone in the boxing community. From all-time greats such as Floyd Mayweather and Roy Jones Jr. to even the most casual of fans, Spence’s style is loved and revered by all who have paid close attention to him.
Brian “Bomac” McIntyre, however, doesn’t understand why the former Olympian has been placed on such a lofty pedestal. The championship victories, along with his pound-for-pound status, is incredibly unwarranted in Bomac's eyes. Having watched Spence (28-0, 22 KOs) for a number of years now, Bomac is convinced that his ranking is a bit fabricated.
“The media put him there,” Bomac told the Best Womens Boxing Show during a recent interview. “They made Spence where he is today. PBC put him there, Showtime put him there. He got a lot of good fights, but there’s not one fight that stamps to me, oh that’s a great fighter.”
Bomac’s words, no matter how flippant, aren't affecting Spence's preparation. Come July 29th, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, the unified champ will stand across the ring from Bomac’s most accomplished fighter in Terence Crawford (39-0, 30 KOs).
Currently, the betting odds are slightly in favor of team Crawford but countless prognosticators believe that their undisputed clash is essentially a toss up. There’s a ton on the line for both men, including their undefeated records.
For the WBC, WBA, and IBF titlist, he’s dominated some of the welterweight division’s best - most notably Danny Garcia, Lamont Peterson, and Yordenis Ugas. Those showings, while impressive to some, aren’t quite as majestic to Bomac. Although his accolades stack up nicely, Bomac simply isn’t willing to toot Spence’s horn like everyone else.
“He accomplished a lot but I haven’t seen a performance out of him to say that’s a great fighter. We need to kick his ass.”
