Moments ago, Bob Arum of Top Rank informed BoxingScene.com that a fight between WBA welterweight champion Miguel Cotto and Ricardo Mayorga is possible, but not for July. Arum said the plan is still for Cotto to fight Alfonso Gomez on April 12, and then fight the winner of the undercard bout between IBF welterweight champion Kermit Cintron and Antonio Margarito, in July.
He did confirm minor talks taking place for a Cotto-Mayorga meeting, and the possibilty of the fight taking place after Cotto's July date. But, Arum did say Mayorga could come into play for July if the winner of Margarito-Cintron is injured and unable to move forward with a July fight with Cotto.
"Mayorga is a definite possibility and he is on Miguel Cotto’s dance card. You have to remember that Miguel will probably fight four times this year. There was some talk. Mayorga is an interesting fight for Miguel, but not for July," Arum said. "Mayorga is a candidate (for July) if the winner of Margarito and Cintron is injured. If that were to happen, then Mayorga is a possibility for the July spot."
After informing Arum of the report coming from El Nuevo Dia, where Mayorga claims the fight with Cotto is a done deal for July, the veteran promoter said:
“There is some truth to what Mayorga is saying. The only thing I take exception to is the fight taking place in July,” Arum said.
