Former world title challenger BJ Flores (34-3-1, 21 KOs) has advised BoxingScene.com that he will be back in the ring on August 11th against WBA #5 rated heavyweight Trevor Bryan (19-0 13 KOs).
The #6 rated Flores will be fighting for the first time in 14 months. The bout takes place in Flores’ hometown at the Celebrity Theater in Phoenix, Arizona.
Flores is very excited about the fight knowing that the winner will be in prime position for a title shot. Anthony Joshua holds the WBA “super” title and Manuel Charr holds the organization’s “regular” belt.
“This is a tough fight,” Flores to BoxingScene.com. “This is a big guy who Don (King) has a lot of hopes for. This fight was supposed to happen in April and then May and then they said June. Finally after I broke camp - 3 weeks later, they called me and said August 11. I was tired of waiting around and quickly agreed.”
Flores has won two fights in a row since losing to former cruiserweight champion Tony Bellew while Bryan hasn’t fought since December and went 2-0 in 2017.
“I am looking forward to facing a big, young undefeated fighter. This is a great challenge for me and I’m looking forward to fighting in my hometown of Phoenix,” said Flores.
IN OTHER NEWS: Promocciones Miguel Cotto Executive Director Bryan Perez has advised BoxingScene.com that WBO light flyweight champion Angel "Tito" Acosta (18-1) will likely return to the ring on September 13th in Las Vegas. The fight will take place on a Golden Boy Promotions card that will be televised by ESPN.
Acosta captured the vacant title last December when he stopped Juan Alejo in the 10th round of their fight in New York. He returned to the ring in June when he stopped Carlos Buitrago in 12 rounds in his native Puerto Rico.
The September 13th fight card will serve as a kickoff to the Canelo Alvarez-Gennady Golovkin rematch weekend that takes place on September 15th. The rematch was originally scheduled for May 5th but the fight was postponed when Alvarez failed two drug tests for a banned substance. Canelo has since enrolled in year round VADA testing and has passed every test he has taken since then.
Perez said that Acosta's opponent should be finalized in the near future.
