Cruiserweight contender BJ Flores (26-1-1, 16KOs) signed a promotional agreement with Don King, hoping to land a fight against another King fighter, WBA champion Guillermo Jones. According to Flores, King is no longer interested in making that fight and wants Flores to fight one of the other champions, like Marco Huck or Krzysztof Wlodarczyk.
After Flores defeated Paul Jennette on October 15th at the O'Reilly Family Event Center in Springfield, King changed his mind on a fight with Jones. It wasn't Flores' win that convinced King to switch his plan. It was the crowd of 3500 fans who packed the venue to watch Flores fight. King would rather have Flores fight one of the other champions, win a title, and then do a big unification showdown with Jones.
"I don't think he knew the type of result we'd get for the fight in Springfield. He said, 'You know, you've got a great thing in Springfield. I don't want to knock one of my top guys off (Jones) and have them start back over. I want the title shot. But if I can fight here again, increase my fan base here again and fight in a place that I love and then have a title shot, I don't care what champion I fight. I just want a shot for a title," Flores told News Leader.
Flores returns on January 28th, at the Shrine Mosque in Springfield, MO. The opponent has not been finalized.
