BoxingScene had previously reported that TMT fighter Mickey Bey would be fighting IBF Lightweight champion Miguel Vasquez on August 30th but things have changed. Bey’s manager Dejuan Blake confirmed to BoxingScene that the fight will now take place on the undercard of the Floyd Mayweather-Marcos Maidana mega fight on September 13th.
“Mickey Bey date has changed to September 13th as the co-main – well I’m not sure if it’s the co-main or the one before the co-main – for Mayweather-Maidana. It’s going to be a good show” Blake would tell BoxingScene. “
“The Mexicans are out there to see and root for Miguel Vasquez. He’s been a champion for five years. He’s there to perform and he’s there to put on a great show and you know Mickey Bey is there to perform. This is a stepping stone and he’s going to be able to step up and perform at the elite level”.
Bey is one of the most promising fighters out of the TMT stable and this will be his first world title fight. Vasquez has proven difficult to beat due to his awkward style and has not lost since 2008 when he fought Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Despite Vasquez’s impressive championship run, Blake believes Bey will be able to defeat his Mexican rival in a fight many might perceive to be difficult.
“You know what I feel? I feel everyone has a shot in this sport. It could take one shot but everyone has to take a challenge. At the end of the day you work hard to get in this position so being that you are in this position, you have to be able to go out there and perform at the best that you are able to perform” said Blake.
Blake manages a good portion of the TMT stable as some of his fighters besides Bey include Ishe Smith, Andrew Tabiti, Ladarius Miller and Ronald Gavril. If Bey wins his fight he will be Blake’s first world champion. Despite the setbacks Blake and Bey have experienced in the past, Blake believes it has prepared them for this moment.
“It’s going to be a shocking feeling for me [to have my first world champion]. I’ve always had faith in Mickey Bey. He’s very talented. I feel everything happens for a situation; even with John Molina. It’s a humbling situation. It shows you when you talk so much sh*t, you have to perform in the ring. So keep your eyes on your opponent at all times and that changed a lot for us I think. Everything happens for a reason in God’s way”.
Bey is hard at work in the gym as he prepares for his world title shot as he will now be on an even bigger stage for the most important fight of his career.
