Opening up the Showtime televised broadcast from the U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati, former welterweight world champion Andre Berto (28-3, 22 KOs) will return to the ring against Steve Upsher (24-3-1, 6 KOs) in a 10-round over the limit welterweight bout.
Berto has been inactive since July of 2012, when he was knocked out by Jesus Soto Karass. He suffered a shoulder injury during the fight and underwent surgery following the loss. Berto has lost three of his last four and needs a big statement win to put himself back in the mix.
“This is going to be the beginning of something great," Berto said. “I know Steve is coming to make a name for himself, but you need to understand something – in this past year I’ve been through some sh*t and someone is going to have to pay for it.
“I’m coming up hungry right now. I’ve been out for some time dealing with an injury and I’m looking forward to getting back in the ring. I’m hungry like I haven’t been in a long time.
“It’s a little different not fighting in the main event but I’m just happy to be here. Just a few months ago I didn’t even know if I was going to recover from the shoulder surgery. It’s just a blessing to be back in the ring and fighting on Showtime.”
