An official press conference took place on Saturday at the MGM Grand's Hollywood Studio in Las Vegas, to announce the July 21 battle between Bernard Hopkins (47-4-1, 32 KOs) and Winky Wright (50-3-1, 25 KOs), set to take place at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.
Hopkins comes out of retirement to fight Wright at a catch-weight of 170-pounds.
The combatants are regarded as two of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the sport. Some betting circles in Vegas predict that Hopkins may be listed as an underdog in the fight, due to his age (42) and inactivity, but that doesn't seem to bother him. He predicts a very punishing night for Wright.
"You're about to get beat up by a 42-year-old man. I'm your grandfather," Hopkins said. "Nobody wants to be known as getting their ass kicked by an old man. Can you imagine me getting beat by a guy who calls himself 'Winky.' I wouldn't be able to show my face. I'm going to him more times than he's ever been hit in his career."
Wright isn't worried. He predicts another career defining win that will put Hopkins back in retirement.
"I'm trying to put him back in retirement, all jokes aside," Wright said.
