The Alien or The Executioner or whatever moniker he chooses to go by now - Bernard Hopkins - played the role of promoter this last weekend in Verona. Even wearing the hat of promoter at the Lucas Matthysse-Ruslan Provodnikov event this past weekend, he could not escape the questions of a possible return to the ring.
“I’m always boxing man,” Hopkins said to BoxingScene.com. “Days after I lost to Sergey Kovalev I was right back on the street running and back in the gym training.”
Training for what though? A possible return to the right at age 50?
“I’m 50 years old man,” Hopkins said. “I train to stay in shape. If there’s another 50 year old man that wants to, let me know and we can do it.”
Hopkins suffered a defeat to Kovalev last November and rumor had it he would be deciding his future at his 50th birthday celebration. The celebration came and went and no decision was made by Hopkins.
When asked about trying to compete with the best at 50, Hopkins joked and said:
“Why you always gotta remind me that I’m 50 man? In all seriousness, I’m enjoying the other parts of the sport-doing the promoter part of the sport and doing the commentator part of the sport. I still haven’t decided my future in the ring. I will soon, likely by June I’ll decide if I’m coming back or not.”
