The interim-super featherweight champion of the World Boxing Organization, Miguel 'Scorpion' Berchelt (29-2, 26KOs) is looking to make a statement on July 16 in Mexico, when he faces Thai veteran Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo (61-2, 41KOs),.
Berchelt wants to secure a knockout victory in the contest, because the Thai fighter went the distance with WBO super featherweight king Vasyl Lomachenko. Berchelt is the mandatory challenger to Lomachenko's title.
Berchelt was scheduled to get a shot at the title earlier this year in a mandatory fight with Rocky Martinez. The Puerto Rican champion withdrew with injury, so the WBO allowed Berchelt to face George Jupp for the interim-belt.
Berchelt knocked out Jupp, but then the sanctioning body allowed Martinez to make a defense against Lomachenko, who was moving up in weight. Lomachenko scored a brutal fifth round knockout over Martinez last month to capture the belt.
"I think Piriyapinyo is going to be a measuring stick to showcase what I can do. Lomachenko couldn't knock him out, and neither could the legend of Indonesian boxing Chris John, so I would love to be the first to knock him out so the people would talk about me even more," Berchelt said to ESPN Deportes.
"I'll be ready for the best Piriyapinyo, my dream is to fight with the best in the division and I know that after July 16 my name will start ringing off with the likes of Lomachenko, Francisco Vargas, everyone at the top at super featherweight."
Berchelt, a young power hitter, has won eight fights in a row since his unexpected knockout loss to Luis Florez in 2014. All eight of Berchelt's wins have come by way of knockout.
