There were no issues at the scales during Friday's weigh-in for this weekend's Telefutura Solo Boxeo Tecate broadcast. The show airs live from the Pharr Convention Center in McAllen, TX (Saturday, 11PM CT).
In the headliner, unbeaten local prospect Jerry Belmontes (15-0, 5KO) takes on Rameses Gil of Puerto Rico (7-3-5, 5KO) in an eight-round super featherweight bout. Belmontes weighed in at 129.5 lb, while Gil came in at the divisional limit of 130 lb.
A special heavyweight attraction features the comeback of 2004 Olympic Gold medalist Odlanier Solis. The heavyweight contender fights for the first time since his failed title bid against Vitali Klitschko in March '10. Solis takes on Konstantin Airich in a 12-round regional heavyweight title fight.
While the talent is undeniable, the results have been less than eye-catching. Solis was holding his own for the brief amount of time he was in the ring with Klitschko, until he was dropped and his knee gave in at the end of the round. Saturday's comeback isn't promising from a conditioning standpoint, as Solis (17-1, 12KO) came in at a fleshy 267.5 lb. Airich (23-5-2, 17KO) came in at a lean 225.75 lb.
Highlights of the heavyweight attraction will be shown via delay on the telecast.
The televised portion of the card opens with a four-round super bantamweight bout between local rookies Oscar Tovar (4-1, 2KO) and Gilbert Cancino (1-0). Tovar, who hails from Alton, TX, weighed in at 123 lb., slightly heavier than the Brownsville-based Cancino, who weighed 122.25.
