The World Boxing Association has been informed that Venezuelan challenger Ismael Barroso has signed a contract to fight WBA interim-lightweight champion Derry Mathews on November 14 in England. The signed documents have been submitted to the WBA's office.
"I thank God that I signed my contract for my next fight that will be in England ... I'm thankful for the opportunity that's been given to me," Barroso (18-0-2, 17 KO) said.
Mathews (38-9-2, 20 KO) looks forward to making his defense against Barroso. Both men said they are going to train hard in order to give the paying audience a great fight.
"I'm just waiting for the day to arrive. I assure all of the people who have placed their trust in me - that I will not fail them and I'll give a great show. I will win however possible for Venezuela," stressed Barroso.
Mathews captured the vacant interim-title on April 18 when he beat Tony Luis by unanimous decision in a fight held in Liverpool, England. This will be the first defense of his crown.
For his part, Barroso will challenge for his first major title. He is currently ranked by the WBA at #2 in the lightweight division.
