Up and coming super featherweight prospect Mario Barrios (15-0) will face the biggest challenge of his young career when he faces Devis Brochiero (39-4-1) in the main event of this week's edition of Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on ESPN. The fight takes place in Trenton, NJ at the Sun National Bank Center.
The 21-year-old Barrios left his hometown of San Antonio, Texas to set up his camp in Las Vegas, Nevada where quality sparring is more plentiful.
"Training camp has been great. Today was the last day. We had some tremendous sparring out here in Vegas. We pushed hard getting ready for this fight. We love it out here. We went sparring at a couple different gyms. We had a lot of sparring with different fighters. We tried to get sparring that could mimic my opponent," Barrios explained to BoxingScene.com.
The bout will be Barrios' first that is scheduled for 12 rounds. He expects a tough fight and believes the experience he will gain will be invaluable.
"We know Devis is coming with a lot of experience. He is a veteran fighter. He has gone the full 12 rounds several times. We are expecting a very tough fight. We prepared very thoroughly for this fight," Barrios stated.
As for why they decided that the time to take a step up is now, he said that his team - which includes head trainer Bob Santos and his father/trainer Martin Barrios - were all in agreement that he was ready to increase his level of competition.
"This was a decision my whole team came to a conclusion on. My manager and my adviser and my gym felt I was ready after my last couple fights. The opportunity is here and we are going to take it," said Barrios who hopes to get right back in the ring afterwards provided he doesn't suffer any injuries or cuts.
"After this fight if everything goes in our favor I would like to be back in a couple months. Being active is something I enjoy. I am always in he gym and always ready. After this fight we want the bigger caliber fighters."
