TEMECULA, California – Heavyweight Stephan Shaw stayed unbeaten Friday by knocking out Bernardo Marquez in the first round of a scheduled eight-rounder on the Arnold Barboza Jr.-Danielito Zorrilla at Pechanga Resort Casino.
The 29-year-old Shaw (17-0, 13 KOs), a St. Louis native, dropped Marquez three times in the opening round. Their fight was stopped just 2:35 into it.
Marquez (14-5-1, 10 KOs), of Imperial Valley, California, lost inside the distance for the second time in seven years as a pro.
In the following fight, Austin Brooks (6-0, 2 KOs), a southpaw from San Diego, shut out Los Angeles’ Victor Saravia (1-3, 1 KO) on all three scorecards in their four-round featherweight fight. Each judge scored Brooks a 40-36 winner.
Earlier Friday, junior featherweight prospect Floyd Diaz dropped and stopped Pedro Salome in the third round of a 122-pound bout that was scheduled for six rounds.
The official time of the stoppage was 1:17 of the third round.
Las Vegas’ Diaz improved to 6-0 and recorded his second knockout. Salome, of Anaheim, California, lost for the first time as a pro (3-1-1, 1 KO).
Welterweights Jorge Marron Jr. (20-3-2, 7 KOs) and Adrian Yung (28-7-3, 22 KOs) fought to a six-round majority draw in the opening fight of this seven-bout card. One judge scored their fight for Mexico’s Yung, 59-55, but two judges scored it even, 57-57.
