The flyweight unification fight between Sunny Edwards and Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez could be signed off by the end of this week, according to their mutual promoter Eddie Hearn.

IBF king Edwards beat Andres Campos on his Matchroom debut on Saturday night and instantly set his sights on the other champions in the division.

He came close to facing WBC champion Julio Cesar Martinez in October of last year but the fight never materialized and now a showdown with Rodriguez, who holds the WBO, is on the verge of being announced.

Hearn, who promotes both men, revealed that the deal was nearly agreed last week and Robert Garcia-trained Rodriguez was set to fly to London in order to have a face-off with Edwards in the ring at the Wembley Arena.

And now the Matchroom boss insists the fact that Rodriguez did not show up does not mean the fight has fallen through - and that he could be days away from announcing it.

“I’m really confident we can get it done in the next two weeks,” Hearn said. “Maybe even by the end of this week. The fight will be staged in the US.

“We were close to doing a deal last week and he was going to fly over to do a face off in the ring but we couldn’t get a deal done. We are very close.

“I know that we still need to get it done but I genuinely believe he wants to do the fight. Robert Garcia knows it’s a very tough fight, it’s a 50-50 fight. Two great fighters.

“Sunny against Jesse is the toughest fight for Edwards but I think it’s the best fight in the division but if it’s there we have got to do it.”

And Hearn believes a victory for 20-0 Edwards will establish him as arguably Britain’s best.

He said: “If Sunny goes to America and beats Bam, he becomes a British great in my opinion. I think the Americans will love him and the Brits will give him a lot of respect. That’s how you become a star.

“I think he has the potential to be pound-for-pound No.1. But if he beats Jesse Rodriguez you’ve got a right to say he is the top pound-for-pound British fighter.”
