CARLOS BALDOMIR is enjoying his new belts in Santa Fe. A real celebrity, the new WBC and WBA welterweight champion is planning to go to Cancun, Mexico, for to receive his WBC belt.
“I will return to gym in a week, because I must be in good condition for the next bouts”, he told us when we shared a coffee in his warm and humid city.
ACCORDING TO BALDOMIR, he will be fighting this April on the undercard of Floyd Mayweather-Zab Judah. “They told me to fight Arturo Gatti, and I agreed; Gatti is very strong and is looking always for the fight, so I can do my job. It is a very important challenge for me”. Talking about his future, Baldomir is planning to make two or three more fights. “My belts are very valuable, so I will manage myself about the purses”.
IS MAYWEATHER so difficult to fight?
According to Baldomir, no. “First, he is not a natural welterweight; second, you must take the control of the fight, because he is very smart, very fast and looks good counterpunching. Nobody is perfect. I said I knew how to defeat Judah, and I did it. I think I can beat Floyd, that’s all”.
And what about fighting Antonio Margarito? “I think it is impossible. For me, Margarito is the best of the group. He can box, he can punch. We are friends, we were sparring partners, and I know what I am saying. But I think, too, that at this moment the fight is not possible”.
THE NEW CHAMPION is thinking about big purses and he expects to take time to decide. “I have worked with Top Rank's people and now with Javier Zapata, but I will prefer to discuss my money in the future”.
About Judah, he told us “He never can beat me again, because I know him too well. He is very fast, but I found how to connect him with my right hand”. Baldomir thinks he is the best fighter in Argentina. “Omar Narvaez (WBO fly champion) is very good, of course; and Rodrigo Barrios (WBO super feather champ) has a lot of stamina and determination. Argentine boxing is in a good position again and I am happy to have contributed to that”.
