MAIN BOXING GYM, HOUSTON, TX - Within the sweltering humid heat of Main Gym located in the heart of Houston, Texas Craig Callaghan of Liverpool, England spars with former world champion Austin Trout. Callaghan, winner of Europe’s most prestigious amateur boxing tournament the Haringey Cup, is preparing for his sixth professional outing and is also assisting Trout for a date in August.

Craig, a tall rangy welterweight, came to the U.S. to ply his trade and to fulfill dream of becoming a world champion. Tutored by veteran trainer Bobby Benton, Callaghan is picking up the finer aspects and subtle nuances of the professional ranks. Sparring with the likes of Austin Trout is the compulsory homework a young scholar of the ‘Sweet Science’ needs to ready himself for future exams.

“Trout is top class”, Craig responds when asks about the former champion. “He is one of the best in the world. Listen, you don’t beat a Mexican icon’s brother in Mexico to gain the title, and beat Miguel Cotto in New York to defend and not be great.”

Callaghan concedes that he enjoys sparring with high caliber boxers and by doing so gains experience, knowledge and confidence. “I feel that I am getting better with every session with Austin. He punishes me when I make mistakes which forces me to think, forces me to be precise and forces me to setup my shots”, the Liverpudlian acknowledges. “Bobby and I have a great rapport, and after each day of sparring we speak about what I can do to improve and also what I am doing well. I am working to better myself and then to compete with the best.”

‘Cracking’ Craig Callaghan is scheduled to fight Saturday, July 26, 2014 at the Amon Carther Exhibit Hall in Fort Worth, TX. The card to be promoted by Standing 8 Promotions.
