British heavyweight Audley Harrison could possibly lose his £1million purse for Saturday three round TKO loss to WBA heavyweight champion David Haye. The British Boxing Board of Control is investigating Audley's performance, which saw him barely throw any punches for three rounds. They are very upset with how the fight played out.
BBBC secretary Robert Smith said: “Withholding some or all of Audley Harrison’s purse is something which we will have to sit down and consider, bearing in mind it was such a letdown for the 22,000 people at the MEN Arena and the thousands watching at home.
“We’ve withheld purses in the past on many occasions when we feel a fighter has not tried. Myself and the BBBC chairman Charles Giles will watch the fight again then make a decision, but we have the authority to rescind purses and we would not be afraid to use that. Audley Harrison has not been paid yet, so it is something we can do.
“It was not a great night for boxing, was it? My belief is Audley just froze, which is a human thing to do. He got his opportunity to fight for a world heavyweight title and waved that away. He is going to have to live with that forever.”
