Undefeated Guyanese slugger Clive "Punisher" Atwell is promising a war of punches with Mexico's Jhonny Gonzalez, who holds the world featherweight title of the World Boxing Council (WBC). The fight takes place on May 24 in Acapulco, Guerrero, Mexico. Atwell (12-0-1, 7 KOs) takes a big step up on class, while Gonzalez (55-8, 47 KOs) makes the first defense of the title he won from Abner Mares last August with a first round TKO. The bout will be carried by Televisa Deportes.
Atwell took offense to Gonzalez's boast of getting a quick knockout victory.
"Gonzalez is a fighter with great technique and a powerful punch. He works fine with the left hand, but he neglects his defense when he's on the attack and that's what I'm going to take advantage of with my lethal counter-attacks. My idea is to knock him out and not to depend on the scores of the judges," Atwell threatened.
"I'm not Abner Mares. I have what it takes to respond to Gonzalez in the ring and I can really take a punch. He will be amazed that he won't be able to knock me out with that first big punch. I am not afraid....on the contrary, I'm the one who is going to knock him out and embarrass him in front of all the people, so he shouldn't confuse me with someone else."
