Although it's never a surprise in boxing when fences that don't seem capable of being mended nevertheless are, Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum believes former middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik is going to play hell trying to re-establish a shaky reputation that was further damaged when Pavlik pulled out of a fight with Darryl Cunningham slated for Aug. 6. Supposedly, he did so because he was unhappy with money being offered for that fight as well as for a future fight with super middleweight champion Lucian Bute.
"The only way he can even think of overcoming it is to fight on some small cards ... even though it's real hard," said Arum, Pavlik's promoter. "Who's going to buy a ticket to a Kelly Pavlik fight?"
And which network is going to want to deal with Pavlik, who has now pulled out of four fights - two with Paul Williams, one with Brian Vera and now this one?
"I think he has hurt (his career) tremendously because the most important thing for a network or a promotional company is reliability and if there is lack of reliability and you can't count on the fighter, then who the hell wants to deal wit him?" Arum said.
