MICHAEL MARLEY PHILIPPINE DIARY, PART 22: LATEST OFFICIAL NUMBERS SHOW MANNY PACQUIAO WITH 53,000 VOTES TO ROY CHIONGBIAN WITH LESS THAN HALF THAT TOTAL, ABOUT 24,000 VOTES
GENERAL SANTOS CITY--"And the new....Congressman from Sarangani Province...Emmanuel Dapidran Pacquiao..."
It is 2:20 am in this Mindanado metropolis of 500,000 people and I just left a still wide awake Manny Pacquiao who has been told by his shrewdest political advisers that trends show him having an insurmountable lead over billionaire Roy Chiongbian in the Congressional race from nearby Sarangani Province.
"The only way they can beat us now is to hack into the official computers and that will not happen," said one Pacman politicial operative. "Throughout all the barangays in the far flung province, Pacman has been dominating the voting by 2 to 1 and 3 to 1 margins."
The operative said it would be clear by 9 am that Pacquiao had crushed Chiongbian and that the result would be certified by election officials before noon on Tuesday.
On their 10th wedding anniversary, which was decidedly not a romantic one, wife Jinkee went to bed believing her husband, the father of their four children, was a winner in his second electoral foray.
About 12:30 pm, Jinkee sent a text message to Pacman adviser Michael Koncz.
"We won, all the stress was worth it," Pacwife's text said simply.

Promoter Bob Arum, who like Pacman was born in December and will next turn age 79, said the 31 year old champion has given him a unique thrill in winning this election.
"He's so different, Manny," Arum said as we rode back to the Royale Hotel. "He is different to me than Muhammad Ali was, than Marvin Hagler was, than how any of my other great fighters were.
"Ali was a wonderful guy, for sure, but I would say Ali was more selfish, more about himself. where Manny is about helping the people, especially the poorest of people.
"I am so glad the kid won because he deserved to win. He went into his own pocket for a lot of money and he did without thinking of his own financial gain.
"With all the thrills, all the great champions I have had, this was something really special."
After pulling an all nighter like the noctural Manny, Arum said he would head to the Gensan airport for a flight to Manila and then fly on to Las Vegas via Vancouver.
The Hall Of Fame promoter, on top of the fight game for four decades, was just bubbling about the political KO victory by his fighter.
"I am so proud of this kid, I really am," Arum said. "I came over thinking he would go down to defeat but he is smart, he learned from his first election and hired smart political people with a grassroots campaign aimed at the poor people who love and identify with his life story.
"The whole thing is just so wonderful."
