On July 23rd unbeaten super lightweights Terence Crawford (28-0) and Viktor Postol (28-0) will collide at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on the Las Vegas strip. The fight will be distributed by HBO pay-per-view.
Top Rank chairman Bob Arum promotes both fighters and believes that the bout will live up to the hype that it has been receiving.
"I think it is going to be a terrific fight. It is certainly the best fight that could be made at 140 pounds. These are two champions, two undefeated guys. It should be a very competitive fight," Arum stated.
Crawford captured his first world title at lightweight in March of 2014 and had the biggest win of his career three months later when he stopped the then unbeaten and former Olympic gold medalist Yuriorkis Gamboa in 9 rounds.
While Crawford is the favorite, Arum expects a difficult fight for the Omaha native. He expects Postol - who captured the WBC super lightweight title last October by stopping feared Argentine slugger Lucas Matthysse -to present a much greater challenge than Gamboa or any other fighter Crawford has faced.
"I mean Crawford has the potential to be the superstar in boxing. This is by far the toughest fight that he has had. Postol is a tough, tough Ukrainian guy and he is disciplined, a great boxer and then he turns it on and knocks out his opponents so I think it is going to be a very exciting fight," Arum told BoxingScene.com.
Crawford (28-0, 20 KOs), of Omaha, Neb., already a two-division world champion, has won four of his last five bouts by stoppage. The consensus Top-10 pound-for-pound fighter will be making his MGM Grand Garden debut in his third title defense as World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior welterweight world champion.
Postol (28-0, 12 KOs), from Kiev, Ukraine, put his stamp on the boxing landscape when he scored a 10th-round knockout of the heavily-favored former world champion Lucas Matthysse to capture the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) super lightweight world title on October 3, 2015. Having won two of his last three fights by knockout, the Freddie Roach-trained Postol will be making his first defense of that title.
