According to Top Rank CEO Bob Arum, WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao will continue to fight beyond a Floyd Mayweather Jr. mega-bout. Pacquiao and Mayweather may clash this coming November 13 in Las Vegas. In the event Mayweather decides to wait until next year, an alternative date is being lined up in May.
Because of Pacquiao's new political position in the Philippines, Arum doesn't see Pacquiao walking away any time soon.
“I believe Manny will be fighting for a while, possibly a few more years, simply because he will only be able to build the province by earning money from continuing to fight,” Arum told Gareth Davies of The Telegraph.
If Pacquiao fights Mayweather, and wins, there will be a heavy push for him to retire on top. Pacquiao's trainer and close personal friend Freddie Roach wants Pacquiao to retire after a Mayweather fight. He previously stated to BoxingScene.com - "I don't think there will be anything more to prove." Pacquiao's mother has been pushing for Manny to retire since the start of the year.
Pacquiao had to actually approach his mother to receive her blessing for a fight with Mayweather. She wanted him to retire after the March win over Joshua Clottey.
Depending on the business aspect in the pay-per-view department, we can expect to see Mayweather-Pacquiao at least twice. I'm sure both fighters have requested a rematch clause. If one of them retires, the clause will be irrelevant.
