There is a good possibility that Artur Szpilka (18-1, 13 KOs) could end up facing Steve Cunningham (28-7, 13 KOs) in the fall.
Szpilka, now trained by Ronnie Shields, says the fight is being discussed with him. The Polish fighter signed with powerful manager/adviser Al Haymon earlier this year, and Cunningham signed with Haymon a few weeks ago.
There is talk of a fall card, at the end of September and October, with several fights pitting American fighters against Polish fighters. First thing, Szpilka returns on June 12th at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, where his rival is Manuel Quezada (29-9, 18 KOs).
"We are talking [about the Cunningham fight]. We'll see what happens. But yes - I really want to Cunningham, it is to be matched in a Poland versus USA battle and Cunningham would be a suitable opponent - very tough for me. But I want challenges - perhaps [I don't want] the biggest challenge right now, because I'm learning all the time. I am 26 years old. After losing to Jennings I'm treading firmly on the ground and know that there is still a lot of work to do. But I see progress all the time," Szpilka told Mateusz Borek.
