The next ring return for former world champion Antonio Margarito (40-8, 27 KOs) is being planned for a date in April, in Mexico.
In August, Margarito won a ten round split decision over Ramon Alvarez (23-5-2, 15 KOs), the older brother of Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, to capture the WBO Continental super welterweight championship. The scores were 95-94 Alvarez, and 97-92, 97-92 for Margarito.
Canelo was ringside in support of his brother and he also helped his older sibling prepare for the contest.Margarito is hoping to get Canelo (48-1-1, 34KOs), the WBO world champion at 154-pounds, in the ring next year.
The fight with Alvarez was Margarito's second fight since breaking his retirement in March, when he won a ten round decision over Jorge Paez Jr. Prior to the March bout, Margarito retired in December 2011 after getting stopped in his rematch with Miguel Cotto.
Margarito was planning to have a big fight at the end of this year, but it never came about. He is hoping for Canelo, but if that doesn't happen he's willing to face any top opponent at 154-pounds including any of the world champions like Jermell Charlo, Jermall Charlo or Erislandy Lara.
"We have not yet spoken to the promoter, but I expect a big fight is coming because I want to go for one more. Personally I am willing to make a fight with the best there is. If Canelo is willing, then there is no problem because so am I - but if not there are also several other quality fighters, there are other world champions," Margarito said.
Juan Carlos Torres of Zanfer Promotions reveals that Margarito's next fight is being planned in the early months of 2017, likely on a date in April.
"Margarito would be one of the fights that are being planned for the first four months," revealed Torres to ESPN Deportes.
