Anthony Mundine (36-3, 23KOs) kept his number-one ranking with the WBA by winning a close split decision over previously undefeated IBO middleweight champion Daniel Geale (21-1, 13KOs) at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, in Australia. The scores were 116-113 and 114-113 for Mundine, and 115-113 for Geale.
The action was fast-paced and a Mundine knockdown of Geale in the second round was the difference in the scoring. Geale took the fight to Mundine in the early rounds and gave him all he could handle during the contest. They stood their ground and exchanged punches often to steal rounds on the cards. Mundine suffered a cut above the left eye in the tenth round.
Geale let it all hang out in the twelfth and final round, actually rocking Mundine and getting him in trouble, but the more experienced former champion was able to fight his way out of trouble and hang on to win. Mundine now wants a shot at WBA champion Felix Sturm. Sturm is scheduled to make a defense of the title on July 11 against Khoren Gevor.
