WBO, IBF, IBO, WBA heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has no issue with Tyson Fury's decision to part ways with trainer Ben Davison.
As BoxingScene.com first reported earlier this week, Fury made a decision to cut ties with Davison - and hired trainer SugarHill Steward of Detroit, Michigan.
Davison trained Fury for his last five fights. Their relationship began when Fury began his comeback after being away from the ring for over two years.
But in his last fight, back in September against Otto Wallin, saw Fury struggle at times as he won a twelve round unanimous decision. During that fight, Fury sustained a very serious cut, from a punch, and his corner feared the contest would get stopped - which in turn would have given Wallin a TKO win. But Fury was allowed to fight until the final bell.
Joshua was in a similar position back in June - when he was dropped four times and stopped by huge underdog Andy Ruiz.
There were many calls for Joshua to hire a new trainer, but he refused to replace head trainer Rob McCracken. Earlier this month, the two men got revenge when Joshua outboxed Ruiz over twelve rounds to reclaim the heavyweight titles.
The unified champion believes Fury has to do what's right for him.
"Fury has to do what is right for him. Tyson's success is Ben's success. If Fury feels like this is right for him, he has to trust his instinct and follow it because it will only be him that [gets in the ring]," Fury said to Sky Sports.
"I have to trust my instincts. I was watching a Lennox Lewis fight - he had Emanuel Steward in his corner but they still only announce 'Lennox Lewis'. They don't mention the team. Tyson Fury has to do what's right for Tyson Fury because it's only his name that is mentioned when announced as the winner or the loser. As a fighter, first and foremost, it doesn't matter about anyone else.
"I stuck to my guns, didn't listen, and stayed with Rob. We spoke to alternative coaches. When me and Rob are doing pads we need eyes on the outside to say 'your left hand is down' or 'your chin is up'. We created a team which worked really well. In a short space of time he corrected mistakes.
"He has seen me grow. I had a son - it was a scary time because I was young, but he helped me through it. He backed me, and I've backed him. We have supported each other."
