Promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sports has opened up discussions for a potential fight between WBC super middleweight champion Anthony Dirrell (27-0-1, 22KOs) and Paul Smith (35-4, 20KOs).
This past Saturday night in Germany, Smith lost a twelve round unanimous decision to WBO champion Arthur Abraham. Hearn is pushing the WBO to order an immediate rematch, as he feels the scoring of the contest was unfair to Smith.
“They were very preliminary talks and it was one of the first emails I wrote to Al Haymon’s guys and I said: ‘Listen, I don’t know who Dirrell is fighting next but you have got a great opponent here who has just had a very unlucky decision against Arthur Abraham,’” Hearn told the Liverpool ECHO.
“They came back and said ‘yes’ he would certainly be on our list. That was Monday and there have been no talks since. We can’t just limit ourselves to Arthur Abraham because of what he has done. The Abraham fight is a priority but we have to look at all the other options as well and that includes Anthony Dirrell.”
