British lightweight Anthony Crolla is in the hospital after a confrontation with two alleged burglars left him wounded, according to Sky News and promoter Eddie Hearn.
Crolla suffered a head injury and a broken ankle after seeing the alleged burglars at his neighbor’s home, according to Sky News.
“He gave chase, and apprehended one of them, and the other one lifted a slab of concrete and hit him with it, and he fell and broke his ankle,” Crolla’s trainer, Joe Gallagher, told the news outlet.
Hearn tweeted Tuesday evening that Crolla will no longer be fighting on Jan. 23.
The 28-year-old is 29-4-2 with 11 KOs and is coming off a points win last month over Gyorgy Mizsei Jr. Among other recent triumphs are a stoppage of John Murray this past April and a majority decision over Gavin Rees in June 2013.
