Brooklyn, New York - The criticism for Danny Garcia (30-0, 17 KO’s) has been plentiful since his controversial decision victory over Mauricio Herrera in Puerto Rico early last year. It didn’t help matters that he fought an unranked lightweight in Rod Salka at a catch-weight of 142 pounds. This past April he won a decision over Lamont Peterson at a catch-weight of 143 pounds, in a bout many thought he lost as well.
If any of the Garcia’s take the criticism to heart, it’s his trainer and father, Angel Garcia. The trainer feels Garcia was victorious in the Herrera and Peterson bouts because both fighters moved but didn’t land.
“You could run around, but you got to land,” said Garcia of Herrera and Peterson. “You can’t run around and run and not land and think you’re winning.”
Garcia feels his son will be much more suited at 147 and have more success because he won’t be drained to make weight. To Garcia it should have happened a fight or two ago but he won’t dwell in the past, just focus of the future.
“After we’re done with Malignaggi, we’ll fight whoever,” stated the trainer. “We never said no to nobody. Danny faced killers, just look at the resume, even before we got big, we had Shelly Finkel as our manager, and Shelly didn’t make it easy.”
Garcia feels his son will make a statement at 147 and possibly down the line land a Floyd Mayweather shot. But if the fight was to happen, it’d be up to one man only.
“It’s up to Floyd (Mayweather); you know Floyd picks his fights. I can’t put words in his mouth. If Floyd wants to do it, we can do it. We’re not turning nobody down at 147...it could be Floyd, it could be whoever. After Malignaggi, anybody can get it like Broner said.”
