Many fighters have been asked for their thoughts on fighting without an audience as the sport of boxing has just started getting ramped back up after being halted because of the covid-19 pandemic. Most of the responses have been negative to the prospects of fighting without fans but most fighters are still willing to get in the ring to support their families.
Top Rank is the first promoter in the United States to start back up with other promotional outfits like Golden Boy, Premier Boxing Champions and Matchroom USA expected to resume operations in the next 4-6 weeks.
Super featherweight contender Andy Vences (23-1-1) returns to the ring on July 7th against Luis Lopez (20-2) and said that he is actually excited to fight without fans. He believes that it may be an advantage because he doesn't need a crowd to help pump him up during the fight.
"The fighting with no fans, I am excited for it. To be honest, it is going to be like a backyard fight. You aren't fighting for anybody but yourself so I am excited. Even though they are not there I know that all of my fans and all of my people will be watching on ESPN. I don't need that extra adrenaline to perform.
"I fight for myself, my people and my family and I feel just knowing people are watching is enough for me to perform at my best. That is why I am so excited because it is going to come down to our wills of who wants it most. Even if there is people or no people. I am looking forward to fighting with no fans because it is a once in a lifetime opportunity. It is one for the history books to say I fought in the pandemic. I am just glad to say that I was part of this history," Vences told BoxingScene.com.
Vences verus Lopez will serve as the co-feature beat bout underneath the Jose Zepeda-Kendo Kendo Castaneda main event. The action takes place at "The Bubble" at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas like all of the fight cardsTop Rank has promoted since the pandemic hit.
