Up and coming super featherweight prospect Andy Vences (17-0) picked up the biggest victory of his career in November when he defeated the then unbeaten Casey Ramos (23-1) in Las Vegas. The fight was scheduled for 10 rounds but was stopped in the ninth because of a cut Ramos suffered by an accidental head butt.
The Northern California native is happy that he was able to walk away with the victory but wasn't thrilled with his overall performance. He believes that he lost too much weight before the fight and believes it effected his performance.
"I think it was a good victory but I was having some troubles with my weight leading up to that fight. I made weight easy but I over did it and I lost more than I had too so I made the necessarily adjustments," Vences revealed.
"I talked to my nutritionist and the people on my team to just kind of manage it for me the last week so that I don't have to worry or stress about making weight because as it was - the morning of the weigh in I weighed 128 and I just think it effected my performance. I'm not making any excuses but it was just something that I learned from my victory. That I need to let my team do their jobs and not stress about weight."
Next up for Vences is another Unimas headlining appearance against Angel Hernandez (13-7). On paper it appears to be a step back for Vences, but he isn't taking Hernandez, who has never been stopped and has faced many bright prospects, lightly.
Instead, he plans on putting on a great performance and believes that he will display more power than he has in the past.
"My mind is really just focused on myself and what I have to do as a fighter which is throwing more punches and initiating the active more and really just getting more involved in the fight," Vences told BoxingScene.com.
"I talked to my dad and our team and our thing right now is getting the knockout. Look for it. Initiate it. Don't wait for it to happen. Make it happen. I got all the tools to make it happen. Fight your fight but make it happen. I've done it in sparring now it's just a matter of doing it in the ring."
Danny Valdivia (13-0) will face Douglas Ataide (16-2-1) in the televised co-feature. The card takes place at the Tachi Palace Hotel & Casino in Lemoore, California.
