BoxingScene.com recently spoke with rising super featherweight prospect Andy Vences (15-0) of San Jose, Calif. who is scheduled to face Moises Delgadillo (15-15-2) on July 9th in Lemoore, Calif. in the evening's UniMas televised co-feature fight. Jose Ramirez faces Tomas Mendez in the main event.
The 25-year-old Vences last fought in February when he won a wide decision over Yardley Suarez in Southern California. He is currently in his training camp for the Delgadillo fight and is confident that he will be put on a great performance in the Central California region which is a short trek from his home in the Bay Area.
"Training camp has been gone really good. I am feeling sharp and am just ready to go. I have been getting great sparring and everything has been looking good," said Vences who believes he has the perfect game for his opponent.
"I don't stress too much. I mean I look at the guy and what he does so I know what my coach is talking about but my coach is actually the one who does all the studying of the tape and comes up with the game plan and what type of punches and combinations we are going to choose to use if the guy is taller or shorter - in this case he's shorter than me and he likes to stand in front of me and kind of bob and weave sometimes and he ducks his head a lot so we have been practicing a lot of jabs and a lot more combinations and uppercuts just because he likes to get low."
The drive from San Jose to Lemoore is about three hours by car and Vences said he will have a sizable following when he steps in the ring. He believes this is all part of a process of bringing world class boxing back to the Bay Area.
"I got a little bit more than 100 people going. It's not real close but not too far. I will have a lot of people going to see the fight. This is actually something hopefully we will do by sometime next year and bring boxing back to San Jose. There are people here in San Jose who are just waiting for that day we bring boxing back here. Hopefully I can bring that back over here," Vences told BoxingScene.com.
