Wythenshawe’s Andy Morris will fight before the Manchester faithful for the first time in four-years on August the 21st. Morris fights Spaniard Jesus Garcia on the Ricky Hatton-promoted show at the Velodrome; Andy will be putting his skills on display on hometown soil for the first time since his 2005 win over Buster Dennis.
Morris struck bronze at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, he won the British featherweight title as a professional, a points win over John Simpson in 2005, he lost that title to Simpson in 2006, and was then shockingly knocked out by John in their 2007 rubbermatch.
Andy made a return to the ring earlier this year, out-boxing Youssef Al Hamidi over four-rounds back in March. Morris, 26, told the Manchester Evening News that the Hattons can get his career going again.
“I am a champion - I don't care who I fight,” declared Morris. “If you call yourself a champion you fight anyone at your weight and that's how it should be. I want two or three fights this year then to get back in the mix for a title early next year.”
”I have got the talent,” he continued. “I am still young and I can cause a big upset out there again like I did at featherweight. There are still some good fights out there for me and I think I can smash anyone.”
Morris was known for his movement and boxing ability; during his pomp he was a match for any domestic featherweight, weight-making difficulties were cited as the reason for his shocking loss of form in the Simpson fights. Andy is now settled at super-featherweight, a win over Garcia will give him a solid platform for his assault on the domestic division.
