Andres Garcia Tops Jesus Hernandez In 10-Round War

The beauty of a relatively slow weekend in boxing news is that it doesn't take much to make the headlines. Even if it involves two fighters who stand little chance of ever again standing out from the rest of the field.

That's what happened Saturday evening in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. A pair of fighters destined for club show status managed to produce what for the moment serves as the early leader for Fight of the Year, as Andres Garcia scored a unanimous decision over Jesus Hernandez in a 10-round war. 

The bout - a rematch to their 10-round draw last October - headlined on a card streamed live on suljos.tv, a redirect of the WBC's website on nights in which the sanctioning body chooses to present live boxing to the masses. There was a lot of other action going on around the world - and even in Mexico - that could have taken the lead on the webcast. 

Instead, the honors went to two fights who - through a combined 22 fights - have already experienced the worst moments of the sport. 

That never prevented either fighter from throwing down as if a championship was at stake. The flyweights delivered heavyweight action, with Garcia remaining a step ahead for the most part, but reminded every second of the way that a win was never going to come easy. 

The fight drew a well-deserved and raucous round of applause from the sizeable and vocal crowd on hand at the Municipal Auditorium in Cabo San Lucas, the same venue which hosted their first contest.

A winner was provided this time around, as Garcia improves to 7-3-2 (2KO). The flyweight is now unbeaten in his last four contests. Meanwhile, Hernandez dips below .500 as his record is now 5-6-1 (1KO).
